Solve for one, extend to many

By focusing efforts on the needs of a specific group of users we create outcomes that work for a wider group of people. This is a universal benefit of designing and solving accessibility barriers in products.

Exclusion isn’t just limited to physical disabilities. It can include exclusion due to social or economic factors.

For example

If we provide closed captions (subtitles) for a video with spoken word, we support people who are not only deaf, but also people who might have an ear infection, or be in a noisy environment.

Continue to test with a broad range of users, use checklists and testing tools to ensure the needs of a wide range of users are still being met and any issues have not been introduced.
